Our Edelweiss Surf Destinations
In this month's blog post we picked three waves actually worth the flight in July, and for each one, a bit of insider knowledge plus a small way to make the trip lighter on the planet. Because as Swiss surfers, we'll always have to fly to find salt water, but how we do it is up to us. Board bags fly free with Edelweiss, so let's at least make every trip count.
Sri Lanka, the easy one. July is the wrong season for the south coast but exactly right for the east, and Arugam Bay is firing while most of Europe sits flat. Insider tip: the cleanest waves come at dawn before the wind turns onshore, so the early surfers get the best sets and the emptiest lineup. And since you're flying this far anyway, stay three weeks instead of one. One long trip beat three short ones, both for your soul and for the CO2.
Dominican Republic, the long one. Playa Encuentro near Puerto Plata breaks the same way every time thanks to its reef, which feels oddly familiar to anyone raised on a static wave. Insider tip: it's a real community beach, so the local surf schools know the sandbanks and tides better than any app. Book a session with one and you'll surf better and put your money where it belongs. Twenty-eight degrees, a Lycra, and Cabarete next door for the kiters. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, since the reef is the whole reason the wave exists.
Fuerteventura, the honest one. Short hop from Zürich, dependable summer wind and a more relaxed vibe, also a great destination for beginners and intermediates, especially in July! Our Insider tip: the north around El Cotillo holds the cleaner swell when the south blows out, and most tourists never make it up there. This is the closest thing to surfing with a clear conscience, because the shortest flight is always the kindest one. Share a car between spots instead of renting one each.
Surfing and flying will never be a clean love story, and we're Swiss enough to admit it. So, we pick fewer trips, stay longer, support the locals, and bring our own board over a rental. And: Edelweiss flies the first board bag for free!
